Orthopedic Medical Assistant (Contract)
Pay Rate: $28 per hour
Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:30pm
Location: Daly City, CA
Length of Contract: 4-6 months with opportunity for hire
Medical Assistant Focus
- Room patients and prepare exam rooms based on visit type
- Collect and document patient histories, chief complaints, and mechanism of injury
- Review daily schedules and anticipate provider needs
- Assist providers during exams and minor in-office procedures
- Administer injections and medications per provider direction and state scope
- Support patient check-out, follow-up scheduling, and care coordination
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in AdvancedMD
- Communicate with patients in person, by phone, and electronically
- Apply, adjust, and remove casts, splints, and orthopedic braces
- Assist with cast application and safely remove casts using a cast saw
- Fit and educate patients on DME (braces, crutches, walkers, canes)
- Remove sutures and staples per provider order and state regulations
- Manage orthopedic supplies, equipment, and room readiness
- Support follow-up scheduling related to brace fittings and recovery timelines
- Ensure smooth clinic flow while supporting multiple providers
- Verify affected body part and laterality
- Assess pain levels, swelling, mobility, and functional limitations
- Perform vital signs and neurovascular checks (circulation, motion, sensation)
- Observe gait, posture, and movement
- Identify red-flag symptoms requiring immediate provider attention
- Prepare trays and maintain sterile fields for joint injections and aspirations
- Assist with SubQ injections (as permitted)
- Monitor patients for vasovagal or allergic reactions
- Prepare patients for in-office or external imaging
- Perform dressing changes and wound assessments
- Reinforce post-procedure and recovery instructions
- Initiate and track referrals to physical therapy, imaging, or specialists
- Ensure referral results are received prior to follow-up visits
- Communicate delays or issues to providers and patients
- Maintain strong hand-offs to prevent gaps in patient care
- Accurately document work-related injuries and case details
- Verify employer, injury date, adjuster, and case manager information
- Track authorizations, visit approvals, and required documentation
- Communicate work status and restrictions per provider direction
- Ensure Workers’ Comp patients remain on appropriate care timelines
- Support high-volume clinic workflow and multiple providers
- Assist with chart preparation, provider notes, and room turnover
- Maintain infection control, OSHA, and HIPAA compliance
- Respond appropriately to urgent orthopedic presentations
- Maintain a calm, empathetic demeanor with patients in pain or distress
- Deliver high-level customer service consistent with a family-practice culture
Required
- Medical Assistant certificate completion
- Strong organizational, time-management, and prioritization skills
- Ability to manage trauma-heavy orthopedic patient populations
- Excellent communication and follow-through
- Orthopedic, podiatry, rheumatology, or neurology experience
- Casting and splinting experience
- Phlebotomy experience
- Workers’ Compensation experience
- Bilingual: Spanish, Cantonese, and/or Mandarin
- Outpatient orthopedic physician office (non-surgical)
- Hands-on, team-oriented training culture
- Emphasis on urgency, coordination, and continuity of care
- Small-office feel within a multi-provider practice
