Mental Health Professional – Black Maternal and Infant Health Program (Contract)
Work Location: West Oakland, Emeryville, North Oakland, South Berkeley Service Area (in-person)
Pay Rate: $36 per hour
AlliedUP is seeking a Mental Health Professional to support our client’s Black Maternal and Infant Health Program. The Mental Health Professional provides mental health support and case management within a public health setting to improve infant and maternal health outcomes for African American birthing individuals. The role assists with participant enrollment, conducts mental health assessments, participates in interdisciplinary case conferences, supports group sessions, and maintains referral relationships with local mental health providers.
Key Responsibilities
Client & Participant Support
- Conduct participant enrollments including orientation, informed consent, and mental health assessments
- Provide culturally affirming mental health education, crisis awareness, and postpartum/perinatal mental health support
- Maintain accurate documentation, case notes, and participant data in compliance with HIPAA and client policies
- Provide social service case management and linkages to Medi-Cal and community mental health resources
- Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences with BIH Staff
- Address mental health topics, maternal mental health questions, and health disparities impacting African American birthing people
- Develop and maintain referral relationships with local mental health providers
- Maintain confidentiality according to HIPAA & agency requirements
- Stay current on literature related to Black maternal health and infant health disparities
Technical Expertise
Education
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field from an accredited institution required
- Maternal Mental Health Certification preferred
- Minimum 1 year experience in maternal, infant, and child health required
- Experience providing mental health counseling and support to Black birthing and parenting individuals required
- Experience working in community-based or public health settings required
- Experience working on a multidisciplinary team
- Lived knowledge and understanding of African American culture, history, family systems, and community trauma
- Knowledge of community resources serving African American communities

- Public health equity & social determinants of health
- Epidemiology and disease prevention fundamentals
- Strong documentation, reporting, and data entry skills
- Competency in MS Office tools (Word, Excel)
- Experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR) preferred (Epic is a plus)
- Supports Black Infant Health Governing Concepts (culturally relevant, client-centered, strength-based approaches)
- Demonstrates cultural humility and an ability to operate in culturally affirming environments
- Understands health disparities impacting African American maternal-infant health including:
- Preterm birth prevalence
- Low birth-weight rates
- Racial trauma and discrimination impacts
