Billing and Coding Manager (Contract-to-Hire) — Oakland, CA

AlliedUP Cooperative is seeking a dynamic Billing and Coding Manager to oversee and enhance our customer’s clinical revenue cycle. This pivotal role combines strategic oversight, team supervision, and provider collaboration to ensure accuracy, compliance, and maximum reimbursement within FQHC guidelines. Position Type: Contract-to-Hire
Location: Oakland, CA
Pay Rate: $43.00 per hour

Key Responsibilities:

  • Revenue Cycle Management: Lead the end-to-end billing process, including accurate charge capture, coding, timely claims submission, denial management, and collections. Monitor critical KPIs such as days in Accounts Receivable, denial rates, collection rates, and chart closure efficiency to drive continuous improvement.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor the billing staff, fostering a collaborative environment. Support ongoing provider education related to coding, documentation, and billing best practices.
  • Provider Support & Education: Review provider charge entries for accuracy and completeness, ensuring correct modifier and diagnosis linkage. Conduct regular training sessions and provide constructive feedback to improve documentation quality and revenue outcomes.
  • Compliance & Optimization: Ensure all billing and coding activities adhere to federal, state, and payer-specific regulations, including FQHC reimbursement policies, Medicaid PPS, Medicare FQHC guidelines, and managed care contracts. Maintain strong payer relationships, address claim issues, and support contract negotiations as needed.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Generate comprehensive reports for leadership on visit volumes, payer mix, coding trends, revenue per visit, and financial metrics. Use data insights to recommend workflow enhancements and revenue optimization strategies.
  • Financial Collaboration: Partner with executive leadership, including the CFO and Controller, to support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning related to clinical revenue.

Qualifications:

  • Certification in Medical Billing and Coding (e.g., CPC, CCS, or equivalent)
  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare, business, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in medical billing, coding, or revenue cycle management, preferably within an FQHC or outpatient clinic setting
  • Deep understanding of FQHC billing practices, including Medicaid PPS, Medicare FQHC regulations, and managed care contracts
  • Proven success in improving revenue cycle performance and financial outcomes
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Record (EHR) and billing software (such as Epic) preferred
