The Secret to Allied Health Retention? It’s All About Employee Success!

Retention and turnover pain is intense for healthcare facilities everywhere. Overburdened staff members and understaffed teams hurt everyone, from the patients to the staff to the care facilities.

AlliedUP’s mission has always been to do more for allied health workers so they are empowered and equipped to do more of what matters, like:

  • Providing the best care and service to their patients
  • Increasing the efficiency and improving operations of the healthcare facilities where they work
  • Growing as professionals; committed to good work and gaining new skills and career experience

A key solution to increasing allied health retention and reducing turnover is to focus directly on employees. This is why we created the Employee Success Program (ESP).

The ESP helps allied healthcare professionals find success on the job and become a stabilizing force in helping healthcare facilities attract and retain talent.

AlliedUP’s ESP supplements employer’s existing onboarding and in-house training programs by providing practical workplace upskilling to allied professionals at different stages in their workplace journey. The ESP is for employers and workers who are:

  • Fresh on the job and just starting to gain their footing
  • Established but in need of stronger soft skills
  • Eager for workplace training and growth

By increasing skills development and professional support within healthcare facilities themselves, AlliedUP has found a way to help allied health professionals get more comfortable on the job and give employers onboarding and training boosts resulting in more proficient, confident, and engaged team members.

Here’s the five-stage breakdown of how the AlliedUP ESP works:

Stage 1: An Employee Success Program Customized for You
As an employer, you meet with your AlliedUP ESP manager to develop and refine the program so that it most closely aligns with your needs and goals.

While AlliedUP has built a framework for proven success, we also know that adapting to the unique skill needs of your healthcare environment is the only way to truly give new hires the support and training they need.

Customization might include which workplace competencies to focus on or which set of employees to give more support to.

Stage 2: We Train You How to Select Participants
Not every new hire belongs in the ESP. Choosing the right new hires for this focused attention will determine its success and how much the employees gain from the work.

We train you how to identify the best candidates for the greatest dual impact (on their success and your operation).  Hint: Great ESP candidates want to learn and are coachable.

Stage 3: Employee Skill Survey
Once participants are selected, AlliedUP surveys each one for skill maturity to understand their baseline and set targets for growth.

Stage 4: Self-Paced Learning Begins

Once we have a thorough understanding and baseline of your participant’s skills, learning begins with a series of seven proprietary, self-paced learning modules.

These rich learning modules include learning areas such as:

  • Working in High-Performing Healthcare Teams
  • Compassion in Healthcare
  • Having Difficult Conversations

Because these modules are self paced, employees can work the training into their schedules and tackle the content in a rhythm that works for them.

Step 5: Individual Quality Check Ins

An AlliedUP Employment Specialist meets with the healthcare workers at least twice a month to discuss their job satisfaction, challenges and professional development opportunities, as well as how they’re applying the lessons learned from the online courses.

As a result of ongoing coaching and performance feedback, the Employment Specialist works to improve healthcare worker retention.

These five stages make for a robust program, underpinned by a consistent feedback loop that includes all stakeholders; the employee, you (the employer), and AlliedUP. Every two weeks, a progress report is sent out outlining program progress and where improvement or further development is needed.

Employee participants love progress updates as a way to engage with their managers and demonstrate commitment and success.

Employers find the updates important to understand program participant engagement and progress compared to on-the-job application. The updates afford managers the opportunity to assess where additional training and coaching is needed to continually advance employee competencies and behaviors that lead to ongoing success.

The most important question we love hearing is, “Does it work?”

We have great news: it does.

The AlliedUP Employee Success Program helps allied healthcare workers better perform and succeed on the job. Participants not only give the program a 5 out of 5 satisfaction score, they also stay longer and contribute more to the workplace.

AlliedUP ESP is a win-win for workers and healthcare workplaces, and why we believe in the power of increasing workplace engagement through learning and skill development.
